What Is an FSSAI License?

An FSSAI license is the government approval a business needs to make, store, transport, distribute or sell food in India. It is also called a food licence or food safety licence.

FSSAI is the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, which regulates food safety under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Once approved, you receive a 14-digit FSSAI number that must be shown at your premises and printed on your food packaging.

New FSSAI Rules from 1 April 2026

Three changes every food business should know

Lifetime validity

A new license or registration no longer expires after one to five years, and periodic renewal has ended. The annual fee and returns are still due.

Higher turnover limits

Basic Registration now covers turnover up to ₹1.5 crore, up from ₹12 lakh. A State License covers up to ₹50 crore, and Central applies above that.

Automatic migration

If the new limits change your category, your existing license moves across and your license number stays the same.

Anyone who makes, stores, transports, distributes or sells food in India. That includes restaurants, cloud kitchens, home bakers, manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, transporters and online food sellers.

FSSAI apply online works through the government FoSCoS portal, using Form A for registration or Form B for a license. You can file it yourself, or send us your details and we will prepare and file your food licence application for you.

Yes. Food licence, food safety licence and FSSAI license all mean the approval issued under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

The government fee is ₹100 a year for Basic Registration, ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 a year for a State License depending on category, and ₹7,500 a year for a Central License. Our service fee starts at ₹1,999.

Basic Registration is usually granted in about 7 days. State and Central licenses typically take 30 to 60 days and may include an inspection.

Sometimes. FSSAI offers instant (tatkal) issue for many lower-risk categories once your PAN and Aadhaar are verified online. Manufacturing and higher-risk businesses go through the normal review.

For Basic Registration, a photo, ID proof and address proof of the premises are usually enough. Licenses also need business registration papers, a list of food products and a layout plan.

From 1 April 2026, licenses and registrations have lifetime validity, so periodic renewal has ended. You must still pay the annual fee and file returns where they apply, or the license can be suspended.

Food delivery platforms ask for a valid FSSAI number before listing you. Most restaurants and cloud kitchens with turnover up to ₹1.5 crore need Basic Registration.

It is an offence under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and can lead to heavy penalties and closure of the business.
